DOC4000: FAQs

Q: What is DOC4000?
A: DOC4000 is Honeywell’s new offering for system documentation and automation change management that represents the next generation of DOC3000. In addition to providing core DOC3000 functionality, this new offering can be extended to provide similar functionality for Honeywell’s Experion® Process Knowledge System (PKS), Honeywell advanced solutions, third-party DCS systems, advanced solutions, safety systems, instrument databases, and more.

Q: For what is DOC4000 used?
A: DOC4000 is the next generation of DOC3000 that can be used for a wide variety of system documentation, reporting, and change management tasks. For example, it can be used to generate accurate documentation of configured automation systems that can then be automatically updated, tracked and accessed enterprise-wide through DOC4000 to enable productive collaboration between operations, maintenance, and safety personnel. Useful cross-reference reports can be run to quickly identify relationships between various automation system components that can be used to minimize engineering effort and avoid maintenance incidents. It also meets customer requirements regarding regulatory compliance obligations under FDA 21 CFR Part 11 (Electronic Records and Signatures) and OSHA 1910.119 (PSM Management of Change) by recording and tracking changes across automation systems.

Q: What are the key benefits of DOC4000?
A: The key benefits of DOC4000 are:

  • Reduced engineering effort (faster and more accurate documentation)
  • Higher system reliability (database integrity checks avoid system configuration problems)
  • Fewer incidents (improved maintenance planning, avoid accidental shutdowns)
  • Improved productivity and information sharing (intranet/extranet accessibility)
  • Compliance with laws, regulations, and international quality standards
    • Support for 21 CFR Part 11 (electronic records and signatures)
    • Support for OSHA 1910.119 PSM management of change
    • Supports audit trail requirements of ISO9000

Q: Does Honeywell still sell DOC3000?
A: Yes. For existing DOC3000 customers, Honeywell continues to maintain an exclusive reseller agreement with PAS. Existing customers can continue to expand their system licensing (e.g. tag count) and purchase additional feature modules through Honeywell. However, the new DOC4000 product will be the only offering available to new customers and represents the future migration path for existing DOC3000 customers. After March 2008, no further DOC3000 license sales will occur.

Q: Does Honeywell still support DOC3000?
A: Yes. Honeywell continues to be the primary product support provider though our global TAC organization. Support for DOC3000 is managed as a component of Honeywell’s SESP/Benefits Guardianship support program. However, per our new agreement with PAS, support DOC3000 will be discontinued after March 2008.

Customers who maintain DOC3000 support will have the option to migrate to Honeywell’s DOC4000 base system as part of their software upgrade support entitlement.

Q: What is the migration path for existing DOC3000 customers?
A: Customers who maintain DOC3000 support through Honeywell will be able to migrate to Honeywell’s DOC4000 as part of their existing software upgrade entitlement.

Note however, that the solution architecture of DOC4000 is very different  than DOC3000. DOC4000 is a web-server application that typically requires a new server and additional licensing requirements for Microsoft SQL database.

Although both DOC3000 and DOC4000 leverage the existing Automatic Data Update (ADU) infrastructure for TPS system, the installation of DOC4000 is completely independent DOC3000. Customers can choose to remove the existing DOC3000 system or leave it in place as the site familiarizes itself with the new DOC4000 application.

Q: What additional value is provided by migrating from DOC3000 to the Honeywell TPS version of DOC4000?
A: For DOC3000 customers with restricted tag counts or customers that did not purchase all available DOC3000 modules, upgrade to Honeywell’s DOC4000 will immediately deliver value from expanded functionality. For example, tag count restrictions have been removed for systems larger than 5,000 tags. Certain module functionality (CL Manager, DS Manager, etc.) that was purchased separately in DOC3000 is now included with the Honeywell TPS data model that is part of the base DOC4000 software.

Honeywell’s DOC4000 also allows documentation and change management data to be presented to a broader audience through browser-based interfaces accessible over web-based customer intranets/extranets.

Q: What additional value is provided by expanding DOC4000 beyond Honeywell TPS systems capability?
A: Broadening Honeywell’s DOC4000’s scope beyond Honeywell TPS systems allows the application to provide similar functionality and corresponding benefits for Honeywell’s Experion system, Honeywell advanced solutions, third-party DCS systems, advanced solutions, safety systems, instrument databases, and more.

By expanding the scope of DOC4000 beyond Honeywell TPS systems, application benefits are now realizable against other automation system components with increased abilities to cross reference between the diverse automation elements.

Q: Is there any annual support pricing impact from migrating to DOC4000?
A: Yes. Customers will be allowed to upgrade from DOC300 to essentially equivalent DOC4000 functionality as part of their DOC3000 support entitlement. However, the list price licensing structures are different between DOC3000 and DOC4000. Since annual support renewals are based on a percentage of the list price, future SESP/BGP support pricing may go up or down depending on the original configuration of the site. However, this effect should be relatively minimal in a like-for-like migration.

Of course, if the application scope is increased by adding additional automation data models, annual support pricing would likely increase.

Q: Does DOC4000 work with Experion?
A: Yes. Experion data models are available as an incremental data model to the DOC4000 system.

Q: What other Honeywell data models are available?
A: New data models are added regularly based on customer requirements. In addition to the TPS/TDC3000 module, the following Honeywell data models are available:

  • Experion PKS
  • Fail Safe Controller (FSC)
  • Logic Manager (LM)
  • Profit® Controller
  • Uniformance PHD

Q: What additional non-Honeywell data models are available?

Q: Is training necessary to use DOC4000?
A: Training on the use of DOC4000 is offered through PAS’ learning center located in Houston, TX. The training is designed to teach users basic navigation and use of the DOC4000 product. More extensive training on DOC4000 system administration, as well as system-specific technical courses, is also available. It is recommended that new customers send at least one user to participate in this training program to maximize the solution benefits received from DOC4000.  Click here to view current course schedules.

Q: Who do I call for technical support on DOC4000?
A: DOC4000 is supported globally from Honeywell’s Technical Assistance Center (TAC).
